*Aphrodisias, one of the most important archaeological sites of the Aegean region in Turkey. Aphrodisias lies in the Maeander River basin, in a fertile valley 100 miles southeast of the port of Izmir. Famous for its sanctuary of Aphrodite, the city of Goddess of Love Aphrodisias enjoyed a long and prosperous existence from the first century B.C. through the sixth century A.D. Today, many of the city's ancient monuments remain standing, and Excavations have unearthed numerous fine marble statues and other artifacts.
Aphrodisias had a famous sculpture academy in Roman times; it has a great museum dedicated to a good collection of Roman sculpture. Today the ruins, set amid fertile fields of cotton and groves of spindly cypresses, include an elaborate Tetra pylon, or monumental gatethe foundations of the Temple of Aphrodite, the Christian bishop's palace, a white marble Odeon (small theater) in excellent condition, and a the best preserved stadium still capable of seating nearly its original capacity of 30,000 spectators.
